Teaninich 10 years Flora & Fauna

Teaninich is one of those distilleries that operates quietly under the radar, yet has built an impressive reputation over time. This Highland single malt, bottled as part of Diageo’s iconic Flora & Fauna series, perfectly showcases what makes Teaninich unique: freshness, spice, and a grassy character that is rarely found in Scotch whisky. Aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon casks, this whisky offers a clean and balanced profile. It’s surprisingly crisp and vibrant, yet layered and intriguing.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Fresh and floral with hints of apple blossom, freshly cut grass and citrus oil. Subtle background notes of white pepper and menthol.

Palate

Crisp texture delivering green apple, lime zest, ginger and a touch of spice. A slight bitterness develops, reminiscent of green tea.

Finish

Dry and medium in length, with notes of white pepper, grapefruit and delicate lingering herbs.

Flora & Fauna Series

In a world where big names often steal the spotlight, Diageo's Flora & Fauna series is a quiet hero. This particular series was launched in the 1990s to give a stage to lesser-known distilleries within the group's portfolio. Think of names like Auchroisk, Benrinnes, Dailuaine or Inchgower - distilleries that usually disappear in blends, but shine in this series as Single Malt.

What makes this series so charming is its combination of quality, character and simplicity. Each bottle carries a label with an elegant drawing of a flora or fauna scene (hence the name), symbolic of the nature surrounding the distillery in question. The whiskies themselves are often not too heavily filtered, bottled at 43% alcohol, and matured in classic casks such as ex-bourbon or sherry casks - without excessive frills, but with plenty of authenticity.

Flora & Fauna bottlings are loved by collectors and whisky enthusiasts who love discovering something unique, something "off the beaten path". It is like getting a peek behind the scenes of Scotland's whisky world - a world that is not just about marketing, but more importantly about craft and taste.

In short: the Flora & Fauna series is a loving tribute to the silent workhorses of the whisky world. Honest, pure and with its own voice - exactly as single malt is meant to be.

Teaninich Distillery

Teaninich Distillery is located near the village of Alness in the Scottish Highlands, not far from the Cromarty Firth. Founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro, Teaninich is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and has a long history of whisky production.

A unique feature of Teaninich is the use of a special filtering technique, the mash filter, instead of the traditional mash tun. This contributes to the clarity and purity of the whisky. The distillery uses water from the nearby Alness River.

The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a well-balanced and rich flavour. Teaninich is a major supplier of malt whisky for blended whiskies, but also produces excellent single malts. This combination of tradition, innovation and high-quality production makes Teaninich loved by connoisseurs.
