Ardbeg Corryvreckan
Ardbeg Corryvreckan is not just any whisky - it is a wild and powerful expression of all that Islay stands for. Named after the famous whirlpool of Corryvreckan, located in the waters between Islay and Jura, this dram embodies the raw power and mystery of the sea. Aged in a mix of classic oak casks and specially selected French oak casks, this whisky is an intense and layered experience that pushes the boundaries of what a whisky can be.
Tasting note
Nose
The nose opens with a powerful peat smoke, reminiscent of a campfire by the sea. Underneath lies a complex array of scents: salty sea breeze, dark chocolate, blackcurrant and a hint of anise, along with spicy notes of nutmeg and black pepper.
Taste
The first sip is a whirlwind of flavours. The peat smoke is intense, almost overwhelming, but is soon balanced by rich and deep notes of dark cocoa, cherries and blackberries. The spiciness of pepper and clove tantalises the tongue, while the French oak casks add a subtle touch of roasted coffee beans and creamy vanilla. As the whisky develops further on the palate, you will discover hints of bacon, leather and a briny minerality.
Finish
The finish is incredibly long, warming and complex, with lingering smoke and a hint of fruity sweetness.
Ardbeg Distillery
Ardbeg Distillery is located on the south coast of the island of Islay, famous for its rich whisky tradition. Founded in 1815 by the MacDougall family, Ardbeg has a turbulent history with several closures and re-openings, but has become one of the most highly regarded Islay distilleries.
A distinctive feature of Ardbeg Distillery is its strong peat influence, resulting in whiskies with an intense smokiness and maritime character. The distillery uses traditionally handmade copper pot stills and local peat from the surrounding peat fields, which gives the whiskies their distinctive aromas of smoke, sea salt, and tar, combined with hints of citrus and vanilla.
Ardbeg whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a deep and complex flavour. The distillery is also known for its innovative approach, with experimentation in different cask types and maturation processes producing unique and award-winning expressions.
The combination of traditional production methods, an iconic location and an unmistakable flavour profile makes Ardbeg a leading name in the world of Scotch whisky.
