Auchentoshan Distillery

Auchentoshan Distillery is located in Dalmuir, near Glasgow, in the Scottish Lowlands. Founded in 1823, the distillery has a long and rich history in whisky production. Auchentoshan, which means "corner of the field" in Gaelic, is known for its unique distillation process.

A special feature of Auchentoshan is the use of triple distillation, a rarity in the Scotch whisky industry. This process creates an exceptionally pure and light spirit. The distillery has three stills: a wash still, an intermediate still and a spirit still, which together create a refined and delicate profile.

Asta Morris is an independent bottler founded by Belgian whisky connoisseur Bert Bruyneel in 2009. Since its founding, Asta Morris has quickly made a name for itself in the world of independent whisky, rum, and other spirits. Bert's philosophy is quality over quantity. The barrel selection process is rigorous, choosing only those barrels that meet Bert Bruyneel's high standards.

Two additions to the Asta Morris family are Rasta Morris and Asta Maurice. Rasta Morris is the name used for the Single Cask Rums. Asta Maurice is the label created for French distillates. Think Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados.

Auchentoshan Distillery stands near Clydebank, just north-west of Glasgow. Its history began in 1817, when John Bulloch established Duntocher Distillery. The business received its official licence in 1823. Following financial difficulties, the distillery was sold in 1834 to John Hart and Alexander Filshie, who renamed it Auchentoshan. A German air raid badly damaged the site in 1941 and destroyed a warehouse, after which production remained suspended during the Second World War. Distilling resumed in 1948. Stanley P. Morrison purchased the distillery in 1984; in 1994 it passed into full Suntory ownership.

Auchentoshan is distinguished above all by triple distilling every drop of spirit. In addition to a wash still and spirit still, the distillery uses an extra intermediate still. This raises the spirit to approximately 81% alcohol, compared with around 70% at many double-distilled Scotch malt distilleries. Auchentoshan works with unpeated malt and matures its whisky in casks including bourbon, sherry and wine oak. It therefore combines a turbulent Lowland history with a production method that remains highly unusual in Scotland.

Asta Morris is a Belgian independent bottler founded in 2009 by whisky enthusiast and writer Bert Bruyneel. His interest in whisky began in 1994 and developed into considerable expertise through tastings, articles and his involvement with the Wee Dram Whisky Society. Asta Morris initially focused on writing and hosting tastings, but soon took the next step by selecting and bottling distinctive casks.

The first release appeared in 2010: a Glenlivet distilled in 1977. It was followed by carefully selected single cask whiskies from BenRiach and many other distilleries. Asta Morris gradually built a strong reputation for small releases, characterful cask selections and bottlings that allow the identity of both distillery and maturation to shine through. Many whiskies are released at cask strength or with only limited reduction.

Over the years, the range expanded to include rum under the Rasta Morris name, French spirits as Asta Maurice and NOG! gin matured in former whisky casks. Whisky nevertheless remains at the heart of Asta Morris: distinctive, small-scale and selected for enthusiasts who enjoy discovering something beyond the familiar path.
