Description

Cragganmore 12 Years

Cragganmore 12 Years is a Speyside whisky that doesn’t shout, but offers plenty of detail if you take your time. The style is elegant and gently spicy, with a balanced mix of fruit, malt and refined oak. It works beautifully as a calm after dinner dram, because it keeps revealing small layers. Expect a refined Speyside with orchard fruit and honey, gentle spice, a touch of nuttiness and a clean, slightly dry close.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Soft and complex with ripe pear, apple and honey. Malty biscuits, a light floral lift and gentle spice like cinnamon follow, with soft oak and a hint of almond in the background.

Palate

Rounded and smooth with fruity sweetness and a malty core. You’ll find vanilla, a touch of caramel and gentle spice, followed by subtle nuttiness and well balanced oak without bitterness.

Finish

Medium length and elegant with lingering honey, fruit and soft spice. It fades slightly dry with oak and a clean warming spice.

Cragganmore Distillery

Cragganmore Distillery is located in the Speyside region, near the village of Ballindalloch in Moray. Founded in 1869 by John Smith, an experienced distiller, Cragganmore has a rich history and is known for its high-quality single malt whiskies. The distillery is located on the River Spey, which runs from its mouth in the North Sea to deep in the Highlands.

The stills used in Cragganmore's second distillation (the spirit stills) are unique because of their flat top with a special shape of the lyne arm, which contributes to the complex and layered flavour profile of their whiskies. Cragganmore whiskies are known for their smooth and elegant flavour, with notes of honey, flowers, fruit and a subtle spiciness. The distillery matures its whiskies mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a balanced and refined flavour.

Cragganmore is a key component in Johnnie Walker blended whiskies and, as a single malt, is prized by connoisseurs for its complexity and finesse. The combination of an idyllic location, unique production process and high-quality whiskies makes Cragganmore a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

Cragganmore Distillery

Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by John Smith, an experienced distiller who had previously worked at several well-known distilleries. He selected a site beside the River Spey for the pure water of the Craggan Burn and the nearby railway. A private siding allowed raw materials to arrive efficiently and whisky to be transported with ease, a forward-thinking decision for its time.

After Smith’s death, Cragganmore remained in the hands of his family until 1923. Through a series of partnerships, the distillery later became part of the Distillers Company Limited, a predecessor of today’s Diageo. In 1964, the number of stills was increased from two to four, while the unusual design of the original stills was carefully retained.

Cragganmore is known for its short spirit stills with distinctive flat tops and for the continued use of traditional worm tubs. This production method helps create a full and complex Speyside whisky, with malt, ripe fruit, spice, gentle smoke and occasionally savoury notes. As one of the original Classic Malts, Cragganmore played an important role in introducing single malt Scotch whisky to a wider international audience.
