Glenburgie 32 years 1988 - 2020 #1083 Cask Strength

Glenburgie might not be a household name, but among whisky lovers, it holds a special place. This 32-year-old Glenburgie from 1988, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, shows exactly why. Matured in a Refill American Hogshead, it has had ample time to develop complexity while maintaining its distillery character. The result is a refined, fruit-driven whisky with quiet depth and elegant balance – a whisky that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.

Long and delicate with notes of apple cake, light spice, vanilla and a gentle lingering oakiness.

Glenburgie Distillery

Glenburgie Distillery is located in the Speyside region, near the town of Forres in Moray. Founded in 1810, Glenburgie has a long and rich history in whisky production. Originally known as Kilnflat, the distillery was rebuilt and renamed Glenburgie in 1871. Since then, it has gone through several ownership changes and is now owned by Pernod Ricard.

A unique feature of Glenburgie is the use of spherical stills without a so-called reflux ball, which contributes to a robust and full-bodied spirit. The distillery uses water from nearby springs, which ensures the purity and quality of their whiskies. Glenburgie whiskies are known for their fruity and floral flavour profiles, with notes of apple, pear, honey and a subtle hint of spice.

The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a balanced and refined flavour. Glenburgie produces mainly for blends, such as Ballantine's, but their single malts are also appreciated for their complexity and depth. The combination of a historic location, unique production processes and high-quality whiskies makes Glenburgie a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail is one of the most respected and influential independent bottlers in the whisky world. With a history dating back to 1895 and a commitment to quality, craftsmanship and innovation, the company has played a key role in the development and popularisation of single malt whisky. Their extensive portfolio, ranging from rare old whiskies to unique expressions from well-known distilleries, makes Gordon & MacPhail a favourite among whisky collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

History

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail. It began as a grocery shop in Elgin, selling a wide range of products, including tea, coffee, wine, and spirits. Soon the company focused on whisky, starting by bottling single malts, and one of Gordon & MacPhail's most important contributions to the whisky industry was their vision of maturing whiskies over long periods of time. While many distilleries focused on producing whisky for blends, Gordon & MacPhail saw the potential of single malts and began storing whiskies in their own casks for long-term maturation.
