Dürnberg Rabenstein Grüner Veltliner Reserve 2021
They are partners, friends and allies: Christoph Körner is a passionate winemaker who has devoted his talents entirely to vineyard development and vinification. Matthias Marchesani, as ambassador for Dürnberg wines, can be found all over the world. He organises tastings, explains the wines and what makes Dürnberg so special. And Georg Klein not only looks after the financial and economic details, but he is also the driving force behind today's marketing activities and its sometimes unconventional ideas. Each of these three men has his own opinions often they differ. But in the end they always come to an agreement, over a bottle of Rabenstein.
Weingut Dürnberg is situated in the village of Falkenstein (70 km north of Vienna) in the historic heart of Austria's Weinviertel region. The climate has hot summers and cold winters. Together with the high altitude of the vineyards, this ensures excellent grape growth and concentrated aromas.
The Rabenstein vineyard is located on a south-eastern slope. The vines are up to 50 years old and stand on a subsoil of hard clay with a high percentage of limestone. The Grüner Veltliner grapes from this vineyard show the character of this very special terroir with a subtle spiciness and fine mineral notes on the palate, due to the perfect location the soil benefits from with sunshine in the morning and where it does not get too hot in the afternoon. Perfect acidity is assured as a result.
The grapes were brought in at a cool temperature in early November, followed by contact with skins for up to 48 hours. Fermentation of the ripe must takes place in 1000-1200-litre oak barrels and the wine matures there for about 6-10 months.
Scents of ripe pear and apple with soft, toasty notes. Nice body and spicy on the palate with a long mineral finish.
Perfect with smoked trout and horseradish sauce, asparagus with smoked salmon, smoked goose breast, fried/grilled sea bass with fennel and tomatoes, fried pork fillet medallions, roast suckling pig and cabbage salad, prime boiled beef or Beef Wellington.
