Description

Domaine de Baraillon 1984

Tasting note

Nose

Christams is the first thing we name. Chocolate wreaths in a pine tree. Sultanas, currants, figs and dates. Darks scents like old books and furniture wax.

Taste

Wood and grapes, but more like old thick wine. Of course, the high alcohol gives it a big boost. Sipping our glass, we get a bit in a trance. As if we were sitting on a veranda in the south of France with a nice glass of armagnac and a thick cigar looking out over the vineyards ready to be harvested. A lovely sweetness must still be mentioned.

Finish

A hint of liquorice and some marzipan is what we mention in the aftertaste, delicious.

Tasting note
Nose

Warm and rich with chocolate, pine needles and an almost Christmassy spiciness. Raisins, currants, figs and dates are followed by darker notes of old books and furniture wax.

Palate

Full and gently sweet with ripe grapes, old oak and the deep fruitiness of well-aged wine. Tobacco and subtle spices add further depth and enhance its classical, mature character.

Finish

Long and warming with liquorice, marzipan and dried fruit. Gentle oak spice lingers pleasantly.

Domaine de Baraillon

Domaine de Baraillon is located near Lannemaignan in Bas-Armagnac and has been farmed by the Claverie family since 1748. The estate developed over successive generations into a small Armagnac domaine. Management traditionally passed from father to son until Laurence Claverie returned in 2001 after studying viticulture and oenology. She became the first daughter to continue the business and assumed responsibility from vineyard to distillation.

What makes Baraillon distinctive is that its history remains visible in both vineyards and cellars. The estate uses Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc and Baco 22A for Armagnac. These varieties reflect the region’s development: Folle Blanche was the classic distilling grape before phylloxera, while Baco was created afterwards as a more resilient alternative. The cellars still contain pure Baco distillates made by earlier generations, while recent single-varietal releases are often produced from Folle Blanche. Since purchasing its own alambic still in 2012, distillation has taken place on the estate. With preserved vintages dating back to the late nineteenth century, Baraillon is a rare living archive of family, grape variety and harvest year.
