Cognac Mauxion Petite Champagne 1958 Selected by Passion for Whisky

After the great success of our Cognac Mauxion Borderies Lot 36 (93 points WhiskyFun) and our Cognac Mauxion Fins Bois 1960 (90 points Mark Dermul), it is now time to explore another decade. This Petite Champagne Cognac was distilled in 1958 and after a maturation of over 65 years, it was bottled in September 2024. What all happened in 1958? The founding of the BeNeLux was a fact and Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in 1958, better known as Madonna, the Queen of Pop.

Tasting note

Colour

A beautiful deep amber colour with brilliant copper and mahogany hues. The viscosity of the cognac already betrays its rich concentration.

Nose

The nose is intense and complex, with a delicate balance between freshness and deep aged aromas. At first, fresh scents of juicy oranges and ripe plums emerge. As the cognac opens up, notes of honey, sultanas, and a delicate hint of fresh tobacco follow. There is a subtle spicy touch of leather polish and camphor, reflecting the depth and elegance of ageing. We also find a minty scent in the glass along with elegant notes of rancio.

Taste

The attack is full-bodied with a liveliness that is surprising for a cognac of this age. A pleasant tannic structure underpins an intriguing combination of elegant, fruity notes. Citrus fruits take centre stage, with flavours of tangerine and orange marmalade reminiscent of an old Grand Marnier ‘Cuvée du Centenaire’. We move on to dried bananas and ripe peaches. What a fruit bomb!

As the flavour unfolds, oriental pastries and orange blossom water surprise the palate, along with a delicate hint of elderberry spirits. Subtle oak influences add a light touch of tobacco and spice, without being overpowering. The balance between fruitiness and spiciness is excellent, with a lovely harmony between the fresh fruit notes and the matured, more subdued elements. At the end, the wood aromas betray its age. Some nice bitter tannins provide a grand finale.

Finish

The finish is long to very long with plenty of power. Zeste of orange dipped in dark, bitter chocolate continues to dominate the palette, with marmalade notes giving the finish a fresh touch.

Conclusion

This exceptional cognac, aged for 65 years in oak, is a true reflection of the refinement and complexity that Petite Champagne offers. The balance between freshness and deeper, mature aromas is impressive, and the flavour follows the nose closely, making it a harmonious and memorable experience. The long ageing has developed a refined and elegant structure without losing vibrancy. Perfect to enjoy slowly, a true classic for the connoisseur.

Mauxion Cognac

The origins of the Mauxion family date back to 1575 when Pierre Mauxion was born in the village of Houlette. Today, after 13 generations, the estate is still home to the Mauxion family. Antoine Mauxion was the first of the family to produce eaux-de-vie in 1743 and ten generations have since followed in his footsteps. Today, the house of Mauxion Selection continues to embrace original traditions with regard to tending the vineyard and producing high-quality eaux-de-vie.

All Cognac produced by Mauxion Selection comes from the prestigious terroirs of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. To preserve the flavour of their eaux-de-vie, Mauxion Selection Cognac is bottled at cask strength without blending or reduction, allowing the eaux-de-vie to develop with exceptional complexity and depth. While the careful selection process means quantity is limited, it guarantees a Cognac of unparalleled quality, every time.
