Girvan 30 years Crowdfunder Exclusive The Whisky Mercenary

This remarkable bottling stands out not only because of its age, but also due to its unique origin. Distilled at the Girvan Distillery and selected by independent bottler The Whisky Mercenary, this 30-year-old Single Grain Whisky was released as a Crowdfunder Exclusive. Known for producing smooth and refined grain whiskies, Girvan delivers an exceptional expression here. Thirty years of maturation have created a whisky that beautifully balances ripe fruit, creamy vanilla, and subtle wood influence. A true treat for grain whisky lovers, full of elegance, character, and story.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Soft and inviting with aromas of vanilla fudge, caramelised apple, shredded coconut, and a touch of polished oak.

Palate

Creamy and rich on the tongue, with layers of toffee, honey, marzipan, and a whisper of oak spice. Surprisingly lively for its age.

Finish

Long and warming, with lingering sweetness from golden syrup and a gentle spicy fade. A classy conclusion.

Girvan Distillery

Girvan was built by William Grant & Sons on the coast of South Ayrshire, in the Scottish Lowlands, in 1963. The family wanted its own source of grain whisky for its blended Scotch. Led by Charles Gordon, the modern distillery was completed in only nine months. The first spirit flowed on Christmas Day 1963, exactly 76 years after Glenfiddich had also begun production on that date.

Girvan developed into one of Scotland’s largest grain whisky distilleries. Continuous column distillation allows a light, clean spirit to be produced on a large scale. The whisky forms the heart of Grant’s and is also used in other blends. The same site once housed the now-lost Ladyburn malt distillery. It later became home to Ailsa Bay Distillery and the production site of Hendrick’s Gin.

As a single grain, Girvan remained in the background for many years. Girvan Patent Still and releases from independent bottlers brought greater attention to its older stocks. Long-matured Girvan is known for a smooth, creamy style with vanilla, caramel, coconut, gentle fruit and refined oak.

The Whisky Mercenary

The Whisky Mercenary is a Belgian independent bottler and importer founded in 2012 by Jürgen Vromans. Based in Oud-Turnhout, he built on years of experience with whisky tastings, festivals and the selection of distinctive spirits. The name playfully refers to Vromans himself: a ‘mercenary’ searching for remarkable casks to share with fellow enthusiasts.

The main focus is on small-scale single cask bottlings, primarily from Scottish distilleries. Irish whiskey, rum and other spirits also appear within the range. Selection is not determined by age or reputation alone; flavour, character and the individuality of each cask are more important. Many releases are bottled at cask strength, without added colouring and without chill filtration.

The Whisky Mercenary regularly collaborates with whisky clubs, specialist retailers and other independent bottlers. These partnerships create exclusive releases that often consist of only a few hundred bottles. Through personal cask selection, limited outturns and a preference for expressive whisky, the Belgian label has earned a distinctive place among enthusiasts.
