Description
An expressive Jamaican pot still rum from Trelawney County, distilled in 2009 and bottled by Bristol Classic Rum in 2021 at 47.5%. The DOK mark represents a particularly high-ester style, packed with tropical fruit, spice and the powerful character for which this part of Jamaica is renowned.
Tasting note
Nose

Intense and fruity with overripe pineapple, mango and banana, followed by vanilla and caramel. Ginger, cinnamon and a pronounced ester-driven note add vibrancy and depth.

Palate

Powerful and expressive with tropical fruit, pineapple and ripe mango. Caramel and vanilla are joined by black pepper, ginger and spicy oak, while the high ester character provides its unmistakable Jamaican identity.

Finish

Long and powerful with ripe tropical fruit, peppery spices and lingering ester-driven fruitiness. Vanilla, caramel and dry spicy oak remain beautifully present.

Hampden

Hampden Estate is one of Jamaica’s most distinctive rum distilleries. The history of the estate in Trelawny dates back to 1753, and rum has been produced there for generations using remarkably traditional methods. For much of its history, Hampden produced almost exclusively for merchants and blenders. After the Hussey family acquired the estate in 2009, the distillery began ageing its own rum from 2010 onwards. The first official Hampden Estate bottlings were released in 2018.

Production differs considerably from modern industrial rum making. Molasses undergoes exceptionally long fermentation with natural yeasts before being distilled exclusively in copper double retort pot stills. Hampden produces eight different so called marks, each with its own recipe and ester level. As a result, the style ranges from comparatively lighter rum to intensely aromatic high ester distillates such as DOK.

Authenticity remains central after distillation as well. The rum is tropically matured in Jamaica and bottled without added sugar or colouring. This combination of wild fermentation, pot still distillation and distinctive ester profiles has earned Hampden an almost legendary reputation among rum enthusiasts.
