Description
Hampden Estate Pagos Sherry Cask 2023 is a bold meeting of two powerful worlds. The unmistakable, funky Jamaican style of Hampden Estate is paired with full maturation in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez. The result is a rum that remains unmistakably Hampden in character, while gaining depth, richness and a distinctly wine-driven complexity. This is not a subtle experiment, but a confident expression where high esters and sherry influence stand side by side.
Tasting note
Nose

Deep and intense with clear sherry aromas of raisins, figs and walnuts. Classic Hampden notes of overripe banana, pineapple and glue-like esters push through, joined by cocoa, leather and spicy oak.

Palate

Full-bodied and powerful with a striking balance between sweetness and dryness. Dark dried fruits around bitter chocolate and nutty sherry tones are carried by bright esters, citrus zest and firm, slightly tannic oak.

Finish

Long, intense and layered with lingering sherry richness, dry oak, tropical fruit and a lightly bitter, wine-like finale that slowly fades.

Hampden

Hampden Estate is one of Jamaica’s most distinctive rum distilleries. The history of the estate in Trelawny dates back to 1753, and rum has been produced there for generations using remarkably traditional methods. For much of its history, Hampden produced almost exclusively for merchants and blenders. After the Hussey family acquired the estate in 2009, the distillery began ageing its own rum from 2010 onwards. The first official Hampden Estate bottlings were released in 2018.

Production differs considerably from modern industrial rum making. Molasses undergoes exceptionally long fermentation with natural yeasts before being distilled exclusively in copper double retort pot stills. Hampden produces eight different so called marks, each with its own recipe and ester level. As a result, the style ranges from comparatively lighter rum to intensely aromatic high ester distillates such as DOK.

Authenticity remains central after distillation as well. The rum is tropically matured in Jamaica and bottled without added sugar or colouring. This combination of wild fermentation, pot still distillation and distinctive ester profiles has earned Hampden an almost legendary reputation among rum enthusiasts.
