Cihuatán is a rum brand and distillery from El Salvador, established in 2004 from within Ingenio La Cabaña, a long established producer of sugar cane and sugar. The ambition was clear: to create a fully Salvadoran rum capable of sharing the story of the country internationally. The first casks were filled in 2004, but after years of maturation it was not until 2015 that the first Cihuatán rum reached the market.

The distillery controls the production process from sugar cane through to bottling. Rum is distilled from molasses and matured in the warm climate of El Salvador, with American ex bourbon casks playing an important role. By combining different distillates, ages and cask types, Cihuatán can create a broad range of styles, from approachable aged rum to older and limited expressions.

The name Cihuatán refers to a nearby archaeological site and the culture of pre Columbian El Salvador. This historical inspiration runs throughout the presentation and names of its bottlings, giving Cihuatán a distinctive identity within the world of Central American rum.
