Nose

Hartevelt is a historic Dutch genever brand with deep roots in the city of Leiden. Its story begins on Langegracht, where distilling had taken place since 1734 under the name De Fransche Kroon. In 1780, Abraham Hartevelt acquired the distillery and introduced the family name to the business. Under Hartevelt & Zoon, the company developed into an important producer of genever and other spirits.

The distillery remained in family hands for several generations. Following the death of the last family director in 1917, the business continued as N.V. Distilleerderij De Fransche Kroon, formerly Hartevelt & Zoon. During the following decades, Hartevelt grew into one of the largest Dutch spirits producers. Production in Leiden ended in 1967 and the company became part of Lucas Bols a year later.

Hartevelt continued as a genever brand and is particularly known for its young genever, an approachable Dutch style based on grain alcohol, malt wine and botanicals including juniper. In this way, Hartevelt carries a piece of Leiden’s distilling heritage into one of the classic categories of Dutch spirits.
