Irish Velvet is a classic liqueur developed specifically as a base for Irish Coffee. The brand originated in Ireland and was already available during the 1970s. Historic bottles appeared under the name Jameson Irish Velvet, while Irish Distillers registered the Irish Velvet trademark in 1976 for a drink made with Irish whiskey, coffee and sugar.

Those three ingredients remain at the heart of Irish Velvet. Unlike an Irish Cream liqueur, the drink itself contains no cream. Instead, the combination of whiskey, coffee and sugar is designed to make preparing a classic Irish Coffee particularly simple. Irish Velvet is mixed with hot water and finished with a layer of freshly whipped cream.

This clear specialisation has helped Irish Velvet build a loyal following over the years. The liqueur can also be enjoyed neat, over ice or added to coffee and desserts, but its close connection with the classic Irish Coffee remains the defining identity of the brand.
