Built in 1825 by "Long" John MacDonald, the Ben Nevis distillery was so popular by the late 19th century that at one point it employed more than 200 people. After a series of closures and reopenings in the early 20th century, it was finally purchased by former Canadian bootlegger Joseph Hobbs. He installed a coffey still there in 1955, making Ben Nevis the first Scottish distillery capable of producing both malt and grain whisky. At the time, it was common for grain whisky and malt whisky to be blended before it went into the cask. This made it one of the few distilleries in history that could market a single blend whiskey. Several more closures followed after Hobb's death. Finally, stability was assured in 1989 when the distillery was purchased by Nikka Whisky of Japan, a long-time customer company. The turbulent history means there were few bottlings from the distillery until the launch of the 10-year-old single malt in 1996, but the casks have long found their way to independent bottlers and many are highly regarded.

This single cask bottling has undergone a special maturation. Distilled in November 2012 and entered the bottle in January 2023 at cask strength of 56.5%.

After aging in American oak Bourbon barrels, this whisky has had a finish on 1st Fill Rioja Wine Barrique.
