Glenlochy 32 years 1980 - 2012 #1759

Discover the rare refinement of a 32-year-old Glenlochy, a liquid piece of whisky heritage bottled by Gordon & MacPhail.

Tasting note

Nose

On opening the bottle, your senses are greeted by a complex and refined aroma. The nose reveals a symphony of delicate fruit notes, merging with hints of honey, gently beaten leather and a light, floral smoothness.

Taste

You will be surprised by a powerful yet balanced flavour. The Glenlochy shows impressive layers of dried fruits, notes of rich malt, a slight spiciness and a surprising freshness.

Finish

The finish of this particular Glenlochy is in line with its age: long, warming and with a lingering aftertaste of spices and a hint of orange marmalade.

More about Glenlochy Distillery

Glenlochy Distillery, based in Fort William, Scotland, has a rich and varied past. The distillery was founded in the year 1898 by David McAndie as part of a wave of distillery establishments during the late 19th-century whisky boom. Unfortunately, as quickly as this boom began, it also began to decline. Glenlochy closed in 1919, probably due to the aftermath of World War I and the subsequent prohibition in the United States that hit whisky exports.

After several years of stagnation, Glenlochy was revived in 1937 by Train & McIntyre, which took over and then managed it under the name Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd. It later came into the hands of Canadian firm Joseph Hobbs. Over the centuries, Glenlochy has had several owners, but whisky production continued until the early 1980s.

In 1983, during a period when many Scottish distilleries closed their doors due to a decline in whisky sales, Glenlochy closed for good. The distillery fell silent and most of the equipment was removed.

Although Glenlochy no longer produces whisky, the rare bottlings of its single malts live on as collector's items, prized for their unique character and the history they carry with them. Some of the former distillery's buildings have been given new uses, such as housing. However, Glenlochy's legacy as part of Scotch whisky history continues to be felt by whisky enthusiasts around the world.

What others are saying

Serge Valentin gave this Glenlochy a fine tasting note with 89 points. "Bang! A blade, really. Lemons and iron, plus silver and grapefruits. Extremely strong, ala old Rare Malts."
