Port Ellen is counted among the Closed Distilleries as this Islay distillery closed its doors for good in 1983. At the time, demand for peated single malt whiskies was relatively low and since the owner of Port Ellen owned two more Islay distilleries, the decision was made to close Port Ellen for good. 

This special bottling from Gordon & MacPhail has been released in the Connoisseurs Choice series. This series has been around since the 1970s and is seen by aficionados as highly representative of the distilleries named on the label. Many names have been bottled under this label, but Port Ellen will always remain a rarity. Since the distillery closed in 1983, it is no longer possible to bottle relatively young Port Ellen. This bottling was distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2007. The single malt has therefore spent 15 years in oak. Refill Sherry Butts were used for maturation for this bottling.
