A true gem from Brora’s golden era: this Brora 29 Years from 1972, bottled in 2002 by Douglas Laing for their Old & Rare Platinum Selection, is an icon in the whisky world. With only 240 bottles filled at a powerful 59.5%, this is a rare expression from a legendary vintage. Early 1970s Brora is known for its majestic balance of farmy peat, beeswax, salinity and subtle medicinal tones. This bottling showcases the harmony between power, complexity and elegance like few others can.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Layered and intense with aromas of warm peat smoke, damp hay, beeswax and salty sea air. Then come almond, linoleum, old leather books, citrus oil and subtle spicy cellar notes. Deeply aromatic and unmistakably Brora.
Palate
Explosive and oily with flavours of grilled lemon, walnut skin, grape seed, seaweed and a touch of white pepper. The texture is full and bold, with a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness, smoke and spice.
Finish
Long, dry and complex with an evolving mix of coastal smoke, beeswax, oak spice and mineral bitterness. Lingers gently on the tongue for minutes.
Brora Distillery
Brora Distillery is located in the Scottish Highlands, near the coastal town of Brora in Sutherland. Founded in 1819 by the Marquis of Stafford, the distillery was originally known as Clynelish. In 1968, a new Clynelish Distillery was built next to the original one, which was then renamed Brora. The distillery produced until 1983, after which it closed, but its whiskies from that period have achieved legendary status.
A specific feature of Brora whisky is the use of peated malt during certain periods of production, which resulted in a robust and smoky flavour profile, with notes of sea salt, leather and subtle fruitiness. This unique combination of flavours made Brora whisky highly sought after by whisky lovers, collectors and investors.
In 2021, Diageo reopened Brora Distillery after an extensive restoration. The reopening marks a new era for Brora, with the distillery building on its rich heritage and traditional production methods. Brora's revival brings one of the most respected names in Scotch back into production, to the delight of whisky connoisseurs worldwide.
