Some bottles are more than whisky – they’re pieces of liquid history. This 11-year-old Bowmore, distilled in 1979 and bottled in 1990 by Cadenhead, comes in the iconic brown dumpy bottle with a black label. From an era when Bowmore offered bold, medicinal, smoky power with flashes of bright citrus and maritime notes. Serge Valentin of WhiskyFun gave this whisky an impressive 91 points, calling it “oily, salty, extreme – and loved it.” A true Islay powerhouse with no apologies.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Intense and medicinal. Camphor, eucalyptus, and Vicks Vaporub burst out, followed by pine smoke, sauna oils, and liquorice. With water: fresh lemongrass, lemon soda, and a hint of soot emerge. Wild and fascinating.

Palate

Explosive and punchy. Smoked sweets, pinesap drops, and pineapple candies hit first. Then come bitter herbs and Fernet Branca. With water: thicker and oilier, with sooty lemons, white pepper, and less peat but more brine. A bold flavor journey.

Finish

Long and salty with lingering lemon notes. A touch of ginger adds bite in the aftertaste. The finish is as bold and enduring as the dram itself.

Bowmore Distillery

Bowmore Distillery is located on the shores of Loch Indaal in Bowmore, the capital of the island of Islay. Established in 1779, Bowmore is one of Scotland's oldest legal distilleries and has a rich history of craft whisky production.

A unique feature of Bowmore Distillery is the use of its own traditional malting floors, with the barley being hand-turned on floors within the distillery. This traditional process, combined with the use of locally sourced peat, gives Bowmore whiskies their distinctive balance of smokiness and fruity complexity.

Bowmore whiskies are matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and sherry casks, contributing to their deep and complex flavour profile with notes of honey, lemon, sea salt and a subtle smokiness. Its location on the shores of Loch Indaal also provides maritime influences, which are reflected in the whiskies' character.

Cadenhead

Cadenhead, known in full as William Cadenhead Ltd, is the world's oldest independent bottler of Scotch whisky. Founded in 1842 in Aberdeen, Scotland, the company is known for its high-quality, authentic whiskies and other spirits. Cadenhead has a long and rich history and enjoys worldwide esteem among whisky lovers and collectors.

History

Cadenhead was founded in 1842 by George Duncan, but soon William Cadenhead, Duncan's brother-in-law, took over the company. Under his leadership, the company grew into a respected name in the whisky trade. Initially known as a wine and spirits merchant, Cadenhead soon developed into a leading bottler of Scotch whisky. In 1972, the company was sold to J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd, the parent company of Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. This marked a new phase in Cadenhead's history, integrating the company with one of Scotland's best-known distilleries.

Bowmore Distillery stands in the village of the same name on the shores of Loch Indaal and is one of Islay’s most recognised whisky producers. Its history dates back to 1779, making Bowmore the island’s oldest operating distillery. Under the Mutter family, the business developed during the nineteenth century from a small operation into an important producer. Production stopped during the Second World War when the distillery was used by the RAF. A new period of growth followed, with releases such as Black Bowmore further strengthening its international reputation.

Bowmore combines traditional methods with a distinctive and carefully balanced house style. Part of its barley is still germinated on the distillery’s own malting floors and dried over peat smoke. The spirit matures in warehouses including the historic No.1 Vaults beside Loch Indaal, where thick stone walls provide a remarkable environment for long maturation. Bowmore single malt is known for gentle peat smoke, fruit, citrus, floral notes, sea salt and spice, often enriched by bourbon and sherry casks. This makes Bowmore powerful enough for devoted Islay drinkers, yet approachable for anyone beginning to explore smoky whisky.

Cadenhead’s is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler and traces its origins to 1842, when George Duncan established a wine and spirits business in Aberdeen. William Cadenhead joined the company in 1858 and later gave the business his name. Under his successor Robert Duthie, it became particularly renowned for single malt Scotch whisky and Demerara rum.

Following a major auction of its historic stock, Cadenhead’s was acquired in 1972 by J & A Mitchell & Co., owner of Springbank Distillery. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Campbeltown, where the bottler remains based and continues to select and bottle its whiskies.

Cadenhead’s is known for holding a broad range of casks from both famous and less obvious distilleries. Age, reputation or fashion does not determine when a whisky is released; taste and quality come first. The range includes single casks, small batches and blended malts, alongside rum and other spirits. This independent approach, traditional working methods and highly characterful releases have earned Cadenhead’s an outstanding reputation among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
