Caol Ila 12 years

Caol Ila 12 Years is an Islay classic that delicately balances smokiness and freshness. From the Caol Ila distillery tucked away on the east coast of Islay, this whisky offers a smooth, accessible introduction to the island's distinctive peat. Caol Ila 12 is appreciated for its subtle complexity and fresh maritime character, making it both powerful and elegant. For whisky lovers who love smoke but also appreciate the nuances of citrus and a slight saltiness, this whisky is a wonderful choice.

Tasting note

Nose

The nose opens with a pleasant, light peat smoke reminiscent of a campfire at the beach. This smokiness is combined with fresh aromas of citrus, especially lemon and lime, giving the nose a bright, lively touch. There is also a hint of green apple, a touch of briny and a subtle undertone of fresh herbs and barley, which together make for a balanced olfactory experience.

Taste

On the tongue, Caol Ila 12 has a light, silky texture. The smokiness is immediately present but remains delicate and elegant, leaving room for the fresh notes of lemon peel and a slight sweetness of honey. The flavour develops with a subtle hint of black pepper and a gentle spiciness reminiscent of mint and thyme. The maritime influences add a slight saltiness, adding depth without losing the freshness.

Finish

The finish is long and refreshing, with a lingering smokiness and a hint of salinity that slowly fades. Light notes of citrus and a gentle herbal hint linger, making the finish pleasant and balanced.

Caol Ila Distillery

Caol Ila Distillery is located on the picturesque east coast of the island of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay, a strait that separates Islay from Jura. Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, the distillery has a rich history and is the largest distillery on Islay.

A specific feature of Caol Ila is the production of both peated and unpeated single malts. The distillery is particularly famous for its heavily peated whiskies with elegant, maritime influences. The whiskies often have a distinctive flavour profile with notes of smoke, sea salt, citrus, and a subtle sweetness.

Caol Ila traditionally uses copper pot stills and water from nearby Loch nam Ban. The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which contributes to the smooth, balanced flavours.

With its unique combination of tradition, craftsmanship and distinctive flavour profile, Caol Ila remains a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.
