This 23-year-old Laphroaig from Hunter Laing’s exclusive The Kinship series (Edition No. 6) is a majestic Islay whisky with a mature personality. Drawn from a single carefully selected cask and bottled at 50.5%, only 261 bottles were released. While younger Laphroaigs are known for their bold, medicinal punch, this older expression reveals a richer, more complex and layered profile – smoky depth, coastal elegance and a surprisingly silky sophistication. A whisky that evokes the wild shores of Islay, yet welcomes you with grace.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Peaty smoke and seaweed in perfect harmony with sweeter notes of vanilla, dried mango, leather and a touch of medicinal eucalyptus.

Palate

Full and complex with layers of ash, toasted oak, salted liquorice and citrus zest. Beneath it all: honey, black tea and a hint of iodine. The texture is rich and rounded.

Finish

Long and impressive with smoky depth, coastal saltiness and spice, and a lingering soft note of liquorice and sea air.

Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig Distillery is located on the south coast of the island of Islay, right on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig has a long and rich history of producing some of the most distinctive and beloved Islay whiskies.

A specific characteristic of Laphroaig is its distinct peat smoke and medicinal flavour, which gives the whiskies their unique and recognisable character. The distillery traditionally uses copper pot stills and dries the barley over peat fire, creating the distinctive smoke and iodine aromas. Laphroaig whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which contributes to the balance of sweet and smoky flavours.

History

Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd. was founded in 2013 by Stewart Laing, following the split from the family business Douglas Laing & Co. Stewart, who had accumulated decades of experience in the whisky industry, brought his sons, Andrew and Scott, into the new company, keeping Hunter Laing a true family business.

Laphroaig Distillery stands in a sheltered bay on the southern coast of Islay, between Port Ellen and Lagavulin. The distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. The Johnston family remained closely involved with the business for more than a century. An important period began under Ian Hunter, the last Johnston to lead Laphroaig. He modernised the distillery and encouraged the use of American ex-bourbon casks. After his death in 1954, Laphroaig passed to Bessie Williamson, who further developed the brand internationally and became a pioneering figure in Scotch whisky.

Laphroaig is renowned for one of Islay’s most distinctive house styles. Part of the barley is still processed on traditional malting floors and smoked over locally cut peat. Water comes from the Kilbride Stream, while slow distillation and a carefully selected middle cut help shape the characterful spirit. The whisky combines powerful peat smoke with notes of iodine, tar, seaweed, herbs, vanilla and a recognisable medicinal freshness. This unconventional balance has made Laphroaig a favourite among enthusiasts of intensely smoky Islay single malt whisky.

Hunter Laing is an independent, family-owned Scotch whisky company founded in 2013 by Stewart Laing and his sons Andrew and Scott. The family’s whisky heritage reaches back to the 1940s, while Stewart himself built more than sixty years of experience in the industry. Edition Spirits and the Premier Bonding bottling operation were incorporated into the new company at its formation.

Hunter Laing selects and bottles both single malt and single grain Scotch whisky. The focus is on characterful casks, often released as single casks or in small batches. Well-known ranges include Old Malt Cask, Old & Rare, The First Editions, Hepburn’s Choice and The Sovereign. Peated Islay whisky also appears under the Scarabus name, while rum is bottled within the Kill Devil range.

In 2016, the family acquired a site beside Loch Ardnahoe on Islay to build its own distillery. Ardnahoe began production in 2018 and opened to visitors in 2019. Hunter Laing thus developed from a blender and independent bottler into a distillery owner, while careful cask selection and a strong family identity remained at the heart of the business.
