Tasting note

Nose

Upon opening the bottle of the Port Ellen 1983, a complex bouquet of aromas wafts towards you. The smoky hints are unmistakable - a characteristic feature of Islay whiskies - but are beautifully balanced with the softer notes of sea air and dried fruit. Underlying, you will discover subtler notes of fresh leather and a hint of oak, which define the depth and maturity of this 29-year-old malt.

Taste

On the tongue, this whisky unravels its layered personality. The start is rich and powerful with distinct smoky peat and a briny edge, a reflection of its coastal origins. The whisky evolves quickly with a pallet of heather honey, citrus and an assortment of spices performing a dance on your palate. The body is oily and full-bodied, a sensation that seals the presence of the whisky long after swallowing.

Finish

The Port Ellen 1983 shows its true nature in an aftertaste as memorable as its history - long, warming and complex. Smoke and peat gradually give way to a dry, earthy aftertaste with a hint of oak and a subtle sweetness that lingers.

More information

Port Ellen Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery located on the island of Islay, known for its strong peat aromas typical of this island's whiskies. The distillery was founded in 1825 by Alexander Ker Mackay and was later taken over by John Ramsay, who made the distillery play an important role in the whisky industry in the 19th century, especially in developing export markets.

In the 20th century, the distillery changed hands regularly and experienced several closures and re-openings. During its active years, Port Ellen produced a distinctive Islay single malt whisky appreciated for its distinctive smoke flavour and seaweed-like notes.

Unfortunately, Port Ellen closed its doors permanently in 1983 due to the then declining demand for whisky and overcapacity within the industry. The buildings remained standing and the warehouses were used by Diageo, the current owner, to store whisky from other distilleries on the island.
