Benriach Malting Season First Edition

Benriach Malting Season First Edition isn’t about a flashy cask, it’s about the making process itself. Here Benriach puts the spotlight on traditional floor malting, a labour-intensive method that’s now rarely done in-house. The idea is simple: show what happens when extra attention goes into the fundamentals. Expect a bold, malt-driven Speyside whisky with biscuit, honey and orchard fruit, supported by creamy vanilla and gentle spice.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Malty and warm with grain, honey and vanilla. Apple, pear and a hint of lemon zest follow, backed by toasted nuts and soft oak.

Palate

Full and creamy with malty biscuits, toffee and a clear honey note. Orchard fruit keeps it lively, while gentle spice and a soft oak structure add balance. Towards the end a slightly nutty, lightly toasted character appears.

Finish

Medium length and warming with lingering malt, vanilla and soft spice. It fades slightly dry with oak and a clean sweet note.

Benriach Distillery

Benriach Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, near the town of Elgin in Moray. Founded in 1898 by John Duff, Benriach has a rich history marked by both periods of closure and revival. Since reopening in 1965, Benriach has established itself as a producer of high-quality single malt whiskies.

A unique feature of Benriach is its diversity in production processes. The distillery produces both peated and unpeated whiskies, which is rare in the Speyside region. This gives Benriach a wide range of flavour profiles, from smoky and robust to refined and fruity. The distillery uses water from nearby Burnside Springs, which contributes to the purity of their whisky.

Benriach whiskies are known for their complexity and depth, with notes of honey, vanilla, fruit and a hint of spice. Maturation takes place in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry, rum and wine casks, ensuring a rich and layered flavour experience.

The combination of traditional techniques, innovation and a beautiful location makes Benriach a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

Benriach Distillery

Benriach was founded in 1898 by John Duff, during the great whisky boom of the late nineteenth century. The timing proved unfortunate: shortly after opening, the industry entered a deep crisis and production ceased. The floor maltings remained active, however, supplying malted barley to the neighbouring Longmorn distillery. Benriach did not resume whisky production until 1965, after which most of its spirit was destined for blended Scotch.

An important turning point came in 2004, when Benriach was acquired by an independent group and established more prominently as a single malt. Since 2016, the distillery has been part of Brown-Forman. Benriach stands apart within Speyside by producing three distinct styles of spirit: classic unpeated, smoky whisky made with Highland peat and, in smaller quantities, triple-distilled spirit. It also works with an unusually broad selection of casks.

This versatility has made Benriach popular among enthusiasts of creative cask maturation and varied whisky styles. The distillery combines a fruity Speyside foundation with room for smoke, spice and richer cask-driven flavours.
