This remarkable Craigellachie 25 Years was bottled by Douglas Laing as part of their prestigious XOP (Xtra Old Particular) series. Distilled in 1995 and matured in a refill sherry butt until 2021, this cask yielded only 219 bottles at a robust 53.7% ABV. It’s a Speyside single malt full of class and character – showcasing both distilling artistry and maturation finesse. Rich, layered and elegantly bold, it offers a perfect harmony of fruit, oak, spice and sweetness.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Inviting notes of waxy lemon, warmed pecan nuts, golden syrup and home baking. The sherry cask influence brings a lovely underlying sweetness.

Palate

Full and refined with flavours of new leather, oak wood and classic Speyside malted barley. Powerful, yet wonderfully balanced in structure.

Finish

Exceptionally long and complex with glazed red apple, strawberry candy floss and raspberry crème brûlée. A sweet, fruity finish that keeps unfolding.

Craigellachie Distillery

Craigellachie Distillery is located in the village of the same name in the Speyside region, on the banks of the River Spey in Scotland. Founded in 1891 by Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward, Craigellachie has a rich history and is known for its robust and characterful single malt whiskies.

A unique feature of Craigellachie is the use of worm tubs, a traditional cooling system that contributes to the full and complex flavour profile of their whiskies. The distillery uses pure spring water from nearby Blue Hill, which adds to the clarity and purity of their whiskies. History

Douglas Laing & Co. was founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing in Glasgow, Scotland. The company began as a dealer and blender of whisky, but soon focused on selecting and bottling single cask and small batch whiskies.

Douglas Laing has always remained a family business, with the knowledge and passion for whisky passed from generation to generation. After Fred Douglas Laing, the company was run by his son, Fred Laing Jr, and later Fred's daughter Cara Laing and her husband Chris Leggat also joined the company.

Craigellachie was founded in 1891 by whisky entrepreneurs Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie. Designed by celebrated architect Charles Doig, the distillery was built high above the village of Craigellachie, near the meeting point of the Rivers Spey and Fiddich. From the beginning, most of its whisky was intended for blends, including White Horse. Craigellachie later became part of the Distillers Company Limited and eventually Diageo, which sold the distillery to Bacardi together with John Dewar & Sons in 1998.

For many years, Craigellachie was rarely available as an official single malt. This changed in 2014, when a permanent range of bottlings was introduced and the distillery gained greater recognition under its own name. Independent bottlers had already allowed enthusiasts to explore different ages and cask types.

Craigellachie is known for a robust, oily and distinctive Speyside style. Traditional worm tubs provide relatively limited copper contact, helping to preserve a full-bodied spirit with ripe fruit, malt, waxy notes and occasionally a meaty or lightly sulphurous edge. This muscular character sets Craigellachie apart from many lighter Speyside whiskies.

Douglas Laing is an independent, family-owned Scotch whisky company founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. He began as a blender and merchant, building his own inventory of casks sourced from a wide range of distilleries. Those early relationships formed the foundation of a business that is now managed by the third generation of the Laing family.

The company brings together two important disciplines. Carefully selected single cask malt and grain whiskies are released through ranges such as Old Particular and Xtra Old Particular. Douglas Laing also creates blended malts designed to express the character of Scotland’s whisky regions. Its Remarkable Regional Malts include well-known names such as Big Peat, Scallywag, Timorous Beastie, Rock Island, The Epicurean and The Gauldrons.

The whiskies are presented with a strong emphasis on character and authenticity, generally without added colouring or chill filtration. Following the acquisition of Strathearn Distillery in 2019, Douglas Laing also expanded from blending and bottling into distilling. In this way, the family company combines a long history of cask ownership with a distinctive and modern approach to Scotch whisky.
