Mannochmore 12 years Flora & Fauna
Mannochmore may not be the most famous name in Speyside, but it’s a hidden gem worth discovering. This 12-year-old expression from the Flora & Fauna series is fresh, lively, and subtly complex. With floral highlights, fruity hints, and gentle spice, it’s a whisky that invites contemplation and rewards curiosity.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Fresh and grassy with notes of apple blossom, lime, vanilla, and a touch of white grapes. A subtle spiciness adds depth.
Palate
Elegant and slightly oily. Soft malt, citrus peel, green herbs, and a whisper of pear. Wonderfully balanced between freshness and complexity.
Finish
Medium length and dry, with notes of citrus, white pepper, and a hint of toasted almonds.
Flora & Fauna Series
In a world where big names often steal the spotlight, Diageo's Flora & Fauna series is a quiet hero. This particular series was launched in the 1990s to give a stage to lesser-known distilleries within the group's portfolio. Think of names like Auchroisk, Benrinnes, Dailuaine or Inchgower - distilleries that usually disappear in blends, but shine in this series as Single Malt.
What makes this series so charming is its combination of quality, character and simplicity. Each bottle carries a label with an elegant drawing of a flora or fauna scene (hence the name), symbolic of the nature surrounding the distillery in question. The whiskies themselves are often not too heavily filtered, bottled at 43% alcohol, and matured in classic casks such as ex-bourbon or sherry casks - without excessive frills, but with plenty of authenticity.
Flora & Fauna bottlings are loved by collectors and whisky enthusiasts who love discovering something unique, something "off the beaten path". It is like getting a peek behind the scenes of Scotland's whisky world - a world that is not just about marketing, but more importantly about craft and taste.
In short: the Flora & Fauna series is a loving tribute to the silent workhorses of the whisky world. Honest, pure and with its own voice - exactly as single malt is meant to be.
Mannochmore Distillery
Mannochmore Distillery is located in the Speyside region, near Elgin in Moray. Established in 1971, Mannochmore is a relatively young distillery compared to other Speyside distilleries.
A unique feature of Mannochmore Distillery's production process is the sharing of facilities with the neighbouring Glenlossie Distillery. This sharing of resources and staff is unusual and makes the production process more efficient and flexible. Both distilleries use the same water source, the Bardon Burn, and also share their mash tun and washbacks, resulting in a harmonious collaboration and consistent quality in their whisky production.
Mannochmore mainly produces whisky for blends, such as Haig and Dimple. The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a balanced and refined flavour profile with notes of citrus, flowers, green apple and a subtle hint of spice. The combination of a beautiful location, modern techniques and a commitment to quality makes Mannochmore a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.
