Tamdhu 12 Years

Tamdhu is a Speyside distillery best known for sherry cask maturation, and the 12 Years is, for many drinkers, the ideal introduction to that style. It doesn’t try to be loud, it simply delivers richness and balance, packed with dried fruit, nuts and warming spice. Expect a classic sherry-driven Speyside whisky with raisins, orange, chocolate and a gently spicy finish.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich and inviting with raisins, dried apricot and orange peel. Milk chocolate, walnut and caramel follow, supported by warm oak and a hint of cinnamon.

Palate

Rounded and rich with dried fruit, toffee and nutty sherry notes. Cocoa and warming spices like cinnamon and clove add depth, while oak provides structure without turning harsh.

Finish

Medium to long with lingering sherry richness, chocolate and gentle spice. It fades slightly dry with nuts and a warm fruity note.

Tamdhu Distillery

Tamdhu Distillery is located on the banks of the River Spey in the Speyside region of Scotland, near the village of Knockando. Founded in 1897 by a group of blenders led by William Grant, Tamdhu has a rich history of producing high-quality whiskies. The distillery was strategically placed because of its proximity to the river, which provides water for the production process.

Tamdhu mainly uses ex-sherry casks to mature their whiskies. This gives Tamdhu whiskies their characteristic rich and full flavour profiles, with notes of dried fruits, nuts, spices, vanilla and a hint of chocolate.

Tamdhu is also known for its commitment to craftsmanship and quality, as evidenced by their careful selection of casks. The combination of a beautiful location, maturation in mainly ex-sherry casks and dedication to quality makes Tamdhu a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Tamdhu was founded in 1897 on the banks of the River Spey by a group of whisky merchants and blenders. They commissioned Charles Doig to design a modern distillery with its own railway connection. Barley, coal and casks could be transported efficiently through the nearby Dalbeallie station. Sherry casks were already arriving from Spain during the early years, laying the foundations for the style that would later become closely associated with Tamdhu.

The distillery soon became part of Highland Distillers and for many years mainly supplied malt whisky for blends such as The Famous Grouse. Tamdhu experienced several periods of silence and was closed again in 2010. Ian Macleod Distillers acquired the distillery and its stocks in 2011, returning Tamdhu to the market as a single malt brand in its own right.

Tamdhu is dedicated entirely to maturation in oloroso sherry-seasoned casks made from European and American oak. This creates a rich Speyside style with dried fruit, orange, nuts, vanilla, spice and darker oak notes. The combination of fruity spirit and expressive sherry cask maturation makes Tamdhu especially popular among enthusiasts of classic single malt whisky.
