Description

Domaine de Baraillon 1995

Tasting note

Nose

Juicy red apples, pears, grapes with sweet maple syrup, sultanas and candied lemon. Violets and vanilla are also smelled.

Taste

Caramelised peach on melting vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries with creamy milk chocolate. Some mild wood notes also emerge in the flavour, adding an extra layer to this glass.

Finish

The finish is characterised by dried fruit.

The distillery

The Domaine de Baraillon is located just outside Lannemaignan in the Bas-Armagnac. The pretty little estate is surrounded by sunflower, maize and wheat fields and, of course, vineyards. Driving past the Domaine, you wouldn't even know that Armagnac is produced here, were it not for a large barrel on the side of the road with their name written on it.

Claverie's Armagnacs are a combination of two properties: 4 hectares owned by Patriach Paul's sister in Le Freche and 12 hectares around his house. All vineyards are full of the three major grape varieties, Baco, Colombard and Ugni Blanc. Until 2012 they used the Loubere distillery in Labastide d'Armagnac, but in 2012 they bought their own stills in which they now turn their wines into spirits. The fresh eau de vie normally goes into 5,000-litre casks before being transferred to smaller barrels. Both new and old barrels are used for this purpose. The barrels are regularly aerated to promote oxidation. The oldest stocks date back to the late 19th century and it occasionally seems as if time has stood still at Domaine de Baraillon. Tradition and quality are therefore highly valued by the family.

Domaine de Baraillon

Domaine de Baraillon is located near Lannemaignan in Bas-Armagnac and has been farmed by the Claverie family since 1748. The estate developed over successive generations into a small Armagnac domaine. Management traditionally passed from father to son until Laurence Claverie returned in 2001 after studying viticulture and oenology. She became the first daughter to continue the business and assumed responsibility from vineyard to distillation.

What makes Baraillon distinctive is that its history remains visible in both vineyards and cellars. The estate uses Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc and Baco 22A for Armagnac. These varieties reflect the region’s development: Folle Blanche was the classic distilling grape before phylloxera, while Baco was created afterwards as a more resilient alternative. The cellars still contain pure Baco distillates made by earlier generations, while recent single-varietal releases are often produced from Folle Blanche. Since purchasing its own alambic still in 2012, distillation has taken place on the estate. With preserved vintages dating back to the late nineteenth century, Baraillon is a rare living archive of family, grape variety and harvest year.
