Aperol

Aperol is an Italian aperitivo introduced in Padua in 1919 by brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri. They spent seven years developing the recipe before presenting the distinctive orange drink at the Padua trade fair. Its name is derived from the French word apéro, an informal expression for the pre-dinner aperitif occasion.

The Aperol recipe remains secret and combines citrus fruits, herbs and roots. Orange and cinchona are among its recognisable elements. With its relatively low alcohol strength and bittersweet style, Aperol was created as a light aperitivo, designed to be enjoyed before a meal as part of the Italian aperitivo tradition.

The brand gained further prominence during the 1950s with the rise of the Aperol Spritz, combining Aperol with prosecco and soda water. From Veneto, the cocktail developed into an international classic. Aperol later became part of Gruppo Campari, which further expanded the brand worldwide. The vivid orange aperitivo has since become closely associated with modern Italian spritz culture.
