Kilkerran Work in Progress 5 - Sherry Wood

The Kilkerran Work in Progress 5 - Sherry Wood is a special expression from the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland. This distillery, founded by the Mitchell family (also known for Springbank), started the ‘Work in Progress’ series as a way to give aficionados the chance to follow the evolution of their young whiskies as they mature. The ‘Work in Progress’ series eventually became the precursor to their mature core expression, the Kilkerran 12 Year Old.

Tasting note

Nose

The nose is rich and inviting, with notes of dark caramel, stewed plums and dried figs immediately striking. There is a clear presence of sherry influences with hints of sultanas and a slight spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg. After a while, subtle smoky notes emerge, reminiscent of a wood fire or slightly burnt wood, adding a fine Campbeltown character.

Taste

Full and round on the palate with a rich sweetness of dark chocolate and cherry liqueur, complemented by sultanas and dates. The sherry wood gives a velvety mouthfeel, while a slight salty note and a hint of mineral smoke also emerge, typical of Kilkerran. As the flavours develop, hints of almonds and toasted nuts are added, along with a light, peppery spiciness that rounds things off nicely.

Finish

Long and complex, with a sweet and savoury contrast. The sherry cask influences linger, with lingering flavours of dried fruit and a hint of smoke slowly fading. The finish also offers a subtle bitterness of dark chocolate and a hint of leather, giving a mature and satisfying finish to the dram.
