Glenesk 24 years 1975 - 2000 Society Cask No. 86.8
This distillery named Glenesk from 1980 to 1985. Before that, this distillery's whisky was known as Hillside.
Looking further back in time, this distillery produced both grain and malt whisky.
Official bottlings of this distillery can be counted on one hand, but bottlings from independent bottlers are also scarce.
In 1985, the doors of this distillery closed and currently only a malting plant operates at this location.
This bottling comes from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society and has an age of 25 years. Distilled in 1975 and bottled in 2000.
Glenesk Distillery
Glenesk Distillery, originally known as Highland Esk, is located in the Angus region, near the town of Montrose in Scotland. Founded in 1897 by Septimus Parsonage as a brewery, it was converted into a distillery in 1899. Throughout its history, the distillery has had different names and owners, including North Esk and Montrose.
In the 1960s, the distillery was significantly modernised and the name was changed to Glenesk. Glenesk whiskies were known for their smooth and complex character, with notes of fruit, flowers and a subtle spiciness.
Despite its rich history, Glenesk was closed in 1985 and later demolished. Today, Glenesk's remaining bottles are highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors because of their rarity and historical value. Glenesk remains a fascinating part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the unique and refined whiskies it produced.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is a prestigious and exclusive whisky club, founded in 1983 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The SMWS is known for its unique approach to selecting and bottling single cask whiskies, available exclusively to members. It is one of the most respected names in the whisky world worldwide for the high quality and special character of their bottlings.
Instead of listing the name of the distillery on the label, the SMWS uses a unique numbering system for their bottlings. The first number refers to the distillery and the second number to the specific cask bottled. This system adds to the mystique and exclusivity of the bottlings.
