Description

Glenglassaugh 45 Years 1968 – 2014 #1601

A 45 year old single cask Glenglassaugh is rare in itself, and this one sits firmly among the distillery’s very best. WhiskyBase places it in the 90 point range, which tells you all you need to know: this is a whisky taken seriously by both collectors and seasoned drinkers. Expect a luxurious, fully mature Highland style where apple and citrus, tropical fruit and refined oak stay in harmony, with a finish that just keeps going.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich autumn gold in the glass, with a long, luxurious nose. Red apples, the “candle apple” style, are beautifully balanced by delicate spiced orange. With time it softens and a distant note of pineapple juice appears, just enough tropical brightness to lift it.

Palate

Crisp oak spices arrive first, then slowly ease back. Elegant waves of fresh green apple follow, with wisps of ripe banana. Delicate hints of passion fruit, cedar wood and lime zest add fantastic depth without turning heavy.

Finish

Long and layered with lingering fruit, spicy oak and a fresh citrus lift. Cedar, lime and a gentle tropical note keep echoing, exactly the kind of finish you hope for at this calibre and age.

Glenglassaugh Distillery

Glenglassaugh Distillery is located on the scenic coast of the Moray Firth, near the village of Portsoy in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1875 by Colonel James Moir, Glenglassaugh has a rich history marked by several periods of closure and revival.

A specific feature of Glenglassaugh is the use of pure water from the Glassaugh Burn, which contributes to the fresh and lively character of their whiskies. Glenglassaugh whiskies are known for their fruity and floral notes, often combined with a subtle spiciness and honey.

After a long closure, the distillery was revived in 2008, leading to a revival of their traditional production methods and a focus on quality. The whiskies are matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, making for a complex and balanced taste experience. Glenglassaugh Distillery remains a beloved name among whisky lovers and valued for its dedication to craftsmanship.

Glenglassaugh Distillery

Glenglassaugh Distillery stands between Portsoy and Sandend Bay on the northern coast of Aberdeenshire. It was founded in 1875 by local entrepreneur Colonel James Moir beside the Glassaugh Burn. Following his death, the business changed hands several times, and production ceased in 1907. Highland Distilleries revived the site in 1959, constructing a modern production building. This second working period lasted until 1986, after which only the warehouses remained in use.

A new group of investors began restoring Glenglassaugh in 2008, and spirit flowed from the stills again that December. The BenRiach Distillery Company acquired it in 2013; three years later, Glenglassaugh, BenRiach and GlenDronach passed to Brown-Forman. In 2023, the range was rebuilt around the distillery’s coastal identity. Glenglassaugh is distinguished by mineral-rich water from the Glassaugh Spring and maturation in original dunnage warehouses close to the North Sea. Since 2025, it has operated under a shared production model with BenRiach, combining periods of distillation with occasional silent seasons.
