Tobermory Distillery

Tobermory Distillery is located on the picturesque harbour of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, on the west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and has a rich history with periods of closure and re-opening.

A specific feature of Tobermory Distillery is the production of two different types of whisky: the non-peated Tobermory and the heavily peated Ledaig.

Tobermory whisky is known for its fruity and floral character with notes of citrus and honey, while Ledaig whisky is characterised by its robust, smoky flavour with hints of pepper, sea salt and leather. Maturation takes place in a combination mix of bourbon and sherry casks, creating a rich and complex flavour.

Tobermory Distillery stands in the colourful harbour town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and is the island’s only distillery. It was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair under the name Ledaig, Gaelic for ‘safe haven’. Its history has been far from straightforward, with periods of production interrupted by long closures and several changes of ownership. Greater continuity returned during the 1990s, followed by an extensive renovation and modernisation of the distillery between 2017 and 2019.

Tobermory produces two distinctly different Island single malts. Tobermory is unpeated and known for a lively, fruity character with citrus, floral notes, malt, gentle spice and a subtle maritime edge. Ledaig is made with heavily peated malt and combines earthy smoke, pepper, sea air and briny notes with fruit and sweetness. Water for both styles comes from the nearby Gearr Abhainn. This combination of small-scale craftsmanship, varied cask types and two clearly defined house styles makes Tobermory appealing to both curious newcomers and experienced whisky enthusiasts.
