Inchgower 14 years Flora & Fauna
Inchgower is one of those hidden gems from Speyside that rarely takes the spotlight but always delivers a unique experience. This 14-year-old release from the Flora & Fauna series showcases the distillery’s individualistic character with its briny, spicy, and subtly fruity notes. A whisky with personality, just like the distillery itself - perfect for both the seasoned whisky lover and the curious explorer.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Briny and spicy, with green apple, freshly cut grass, and a touch of nuts. Background hints of beeswax and soft floral tones.
Palate
Robust and slightly oily. Spicy malt, white pepper, roasted nuts, and a hint of orange zest. Nicely layered and surprisingly bold.
Finish
Medium to long with a dry, slightly bitter note of nut skins, gentle spices, and a whisper of sea salt.
Flora & Fauna Series
In a world where big names often steal the spotlight, Diageo's Flora & Fauna series is a quiet hero. This particular series was launched in the 1990s to give a stage to lesser-known distilleries within the group's portfolio. Think of names like Auchroisk, Benrinnes, Dailuaine or Inchgower - distilleries that usually disappear in blends, but shine in this series as Single Malt.
What makes this series so charming is its combination of quality, character and simplicity. Each bottle carries a label with an elegant drawing of a flora or fauna scene (hence the name), symbolic of the nature surrounding the distillery in question. The whiskies themselves are often not too heavily filtered, bottled at 43% alcohol, and matured in classic casks such as ex-bourbon or sherry casks - without excessive frills, but with plenty of authenticity.
Flora & Fauna bottlings are loved by collectors and whisky enthusiasts who love discovering something unique, something "off the beaten path". It is like getting a peek behind the scenes of Scotland's whisky world - a world that is not just about marketing, but more importantly about craft and taste.
In short: the Flora & Fauna series is a loving tribute to the silent workhorses of the whisky world. Honest, pure and with its own voice - exactly as single malt is meant to be.
Inchgower Distillery
Inchgower Distillery is located on the shore of the Moray Firth, near the town of Buckie in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1871 by Alexander Wilson, Inchgower has a long and rich history of producing whisky. The distillery was acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1936, which contributed to the integration of Inchgower whisky into well-known blends such as Bell's.
A unique feature of Inchgower is the use of water from the Menduff Hills Spring, which contributes to the purity and character of their whiskies. Inchgower whiskies are known for their full, complex flavour profiles with notes of fruit, nuts and spices.
The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a balanced and deep flavour. Although Inchgower mainly produces for blends, their single malts are loved by connoisseurs for their complexity and unique flavour. The combination of a unique location, rich history and high-quality production makes Inchgower a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.
