Tasting Notes

Nose

Each bottle carries a label with an elegant drawing of a flora or fauna scene (hence the name), symbolic of the nature surrounding the distillery in question. The whiskies themselves are often not too heavily filtered, bottled at 43% alcohol, and matured in classic casks such as ex-bourbon or sherry casks - without excessive frills, but with plenty of authenticity.

Linkwood Distillery

Linkwood Distillery is located in the Speyside region, near Elgin in Moray. Founded in 1821 by Peter Brown, Linkwood has a long and rich history of producing high-quality whiskies. The distillery is known for its traditional production methods and focus on quality.

A unique feature of Linkwood is the use of old oak washbacks, which contribute to the complex flavour profiles of their whiskies. The distillery draws its water from the Millbuies Springs, which contributes to the purity of their products. Linkwood whiskies are known for their elegant and delicate flavour profiles, with notes of flowers, fruit, vanilla and a subtle hint of spice.

The whiskies are mainly matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, making for a rich and layered flavour experience. Linkwood produces single malts as well as whiskies for blends, such as Johnnie Walker and White Horse. The combination of a beautiful location, traditional techniques and high-quality production makes Linkwood a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Linkwood was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown on the estate of the same name near Elgin in Speyside. Production began several years later, and the distillery remained in the Brown family until the end of the nineteenth century. It was completely rebuilt in 1874. Since 1932, Linkwood has belonged through Scottish Malt Distillers to the company that is now part of Diageo.

In the early 1970s, a second distillery was constructed beside the original buildings. Both sites operated alongside each other for a period, until the older plant was taken out of regular production in 1985. The historic buildings were demolished during a further modernisation in 2012.

Linkwood produces an elegant, highly fragrant Speyside spirit. Clear wort, long fermentation and slow distillation create extensive copper contact and notes of flowers, fresh grass, apple, pear and peach, combined with a full texture. Most of the whisky is intended for blended Scotch, so official single malts remain scarce. The 12-year-old Flora & Fauna and releases from independent bottlers offer enthusiasts the best introduction to this refined distillery.
