Nose

Brown sugar, vanilla and fresh melon, complemented by buttery almonds, ripe banana and a touch of coconut. Nutmeg and toasted cinnamon provide warming spice.

Palate

Full and oily with dark chocolate, sweet malt and mandarin peel. Ginger, pepper and aromatic mizunara oak give the spirit a spicy and gently exotic depth.

Finish

Lingering with white pepper, dark cocoa and toasted nuts. Fragrant oak, gentle spices and a subtle touch of sandalwood remain for a long time.

Akkeshi Distillery began distilling in 2016 in the coastal town of Akkeshi on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island. The site was chosen for its cool, humid climate, saline sea fog, extensive wetlands and natural peat. These conditions give Akkeshi clear similarities with Islay, a Scottish whisky region that served as an important source of inspiration from the beginning.

The distillery follows traditional Scottish production methods and uses equipment made by the renowned Forsyths. At the same time, Akkeshi is increasingly developing a distinctly Japanese identity. Hokkaido barley and casks made from local mizunara play a growing role, alongside bourbon, sherry and wine casks. The first fully matured single malt appeared in 2020, followed by a series of releases inspired by Japan’s 24 seasonal divisions.

Akkeshi produces both peated and unpeated malt whisky and now also makes its own pot still grain spirit. Its whisky is often associated with citrus, honey, spice, gentle smoke and a lightly saline character. The combination of Scottish tradition, Hokkaido’s climate and local ingredients gives Akkeshi a distinctive place within modern Japanese whisky.
