Yamazaki distillery, Suntory's flagship distillery, was established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii. The town of Yamazaki was chosen as the location for Japan's first commercial distillery because of its very 'Scottish' climate and because three rivers converge there. At first, Yamazaki produced both malt and grain for Suntory's blends, but the opening of the Chita distillery in 1972 allowed the company to concentrate entirely on single malt whisky. Japanese whisky is highly sought after and currently this 18-year-old Yamazaki is one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world.
Since 1992, the 18-year-old Yamazaki has been part of the core range of Japan's oldest distillery. Unfortunately, the allocation is quite a bit smaller than the demand which has caused the price of this delicious whisky to rise quite a bit in recent years.
This Japanese single malt whisky is a vatting of 80% sherry butt matured whisky, the other 20% being a combination of Japanese Mizunara and American oak.
