Ernest Rapeneau
Ernest Rapeneau started his champagne and wine business in 1901 in the village of Hautvilliers, where champagne was once "discovered" by Dom Pérignon. But it was only in 1927, when the boundaries of the Champagne region were established, that Ernest specialised in the champagne trade.
This new area delimitation meant that only the good terroirs were admitted to the Champagne wine region. This allowed Ernest to better select his wines and improve the quality of his business. Besides being a good businessman, Ernest Rapeneau was above all a lover of Champagne wines.
In 1936, Champagne's excellence was finally recognised and the AOC Champagne was born, a first highlight for his Champagne house, which had already established an excellent reputation. He then decided to expand his range, as well as his distribution network, encouraged to do so by the worldwide increase in Champagne sales.
After 50 years of hard work, he was finally able to enjoy his retirement in 1965, after which his two sons, Francois and Bernard , who had worked in the company since 1944, took over.
Currently, it is already the third and fourth generations who together run the Champagne house. Bernard's grandson Jean Rémy is the commercial man. His father Christophe makes the Champagne. And he does so extremely successfully. So much so that Christophe Rapeneau became SPARKLING WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR 2017.
Champagne Ernest Rapeneau is founded on the legacy of its founder and his descendants: everyone in the family is given the opportunity to gain their own position within the family business with the aim of preserving the Champagne house for posterity. Of course, this does not stop the house from adapting to modern times and improving where necessary. This way, the 10,000 square metres of wine cellars are preserved for future generations.
