Altos de Losada La Bienquerida 2011
Altos de Losada is a distinctive and quality-driven winery located in Bierzo, a lush and mountainous region in northwestern Spain. Bierzo is the homeland of the Mencía grape, which thrives in the area’s cool climate and slate-rich soils, producing wines with elegance, vibrancy, and a strong sense of place. La Bienquerida 2011 is one of the estate’s most special wines, crafted from a tiny, ancient vineyard and released in very limited quantities.
Tasting Note
Nose
The nose is intense and refined, with aromas of black cherry, ripe forest berries, dried flowers, and Mediterranean herbs. Beneath that lie notes of graphite, tobacco, leather, and a gentle earthiness. The bouquet is both deep and fresh.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is velvety and balanced, with ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and fine structure in perfect harmony. Flavors of plum, blackcurrant, bay leaf, and dark chocolate unfold gracefully. The acidity is lively, and the tannins are fine but firm, giving the wine an elegant backbone.
Finish
The finish is long, mineral, and harmonious, with lingering notes of spice, stone, and a gentle dryness. It closes with a sense of calm and refinement – a true mark of class.
Aging Potential
The 2011 vintage has evolved beautifully, transforming youthful intensity into layered complexity. It is drinking wonderfully now, but under proper cellaring conditions, it has the potential to age gracefully until at least 2030 or beyond.
About Altos de Losada
Altos de Losada is a winery fully dedicated to unlocking the potential of Mencía in the heart of Bierzo. The team works exclusively with old vines – many over 80 years old – planted on steep hillsides around the village of Valtuille de Abajo. La Bienquerida is the estate’s crown jewel: a micro-vineyard of barely one hectare, once nearly abandoned, now lovingly restored and protected. The wine is hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in French oak barrels. Every step is carried out with minimal intervention to showcase the purity of the grape and the unique terroir. The 2011 vintage is a beautifully mature expression of this singular site – with depth, elegance, and staying power.
