Auchroisk Distillery

Auchroisk Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, near the village of Mulben in Banffshire, Scotland. Founded in 1974, Auchroisk is a relatively young distillery that has quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality single malt whiskies, particularly for the blended whisky industry. The name "Auchroisk" means "the ford of the red brook" in Gaelic, referring to the nearby source of pure water used in the production process.

A unique feature of Auchroisk is the use of water from nearby Dorie's Well, which contributes to the purity and character of their whiskies. Auchroisk whiskies are known for their fresh and fruity flavour profiles, with notes of apple, pear, citrus and a subtle spiciness. The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills and a slow distillation process, ensuring a rich and balanced spirit.

The whiskies are mainly matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, creating a complex and layered flavour experience. The combination of an idyllic location, modern techniques and a strong focus on quality makes Auchroisk a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

History

Douglas Laing & Co. was founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing in Glasgow, Scotland. The company began as a dealer and blender of whisky, but soon focused on selecting and bottling single cask and small batch whiskies.

Douglas Laing has always remained a family business, with the knowledge and passion for whisky passed from generation to generation. After Fred Douglas Laing, the company was run by his son, Fred Laing Jr, and later Fred's daughter Cara Laing and her husband Chris Leggat also joined the company.

Auchroisk is a relatively young whisky distillery in Speyside, built between 1972 and 1974 for Justerini & Brooks. The site was chosen following the discovery of Dorie’s Well, a water source considered suitable for malt whisky production. The distillery was established to supply whisky for the well-known J&B blends and developed into an important producer of malt whisky for blended Scotch.

The first official Auchroisk single malt appeared in 1986 under the name The Singleton, as Auchroisk was thought too difficult for many consumers outside Scotland to pronounce. In 2001, the original name returned on a 10-year-old bottling in the Flora & Fauna range. Older expressions have also appeared in the Rare Malts and Special Releases, while independent bottlers offer different ages and cask types.

Auchroisk is known for a robust yet approachable Speyside style, with malty, fruity and nutty notes and enough structure for long maturation. With relatively few official releases, the distillery remains a rewarding discovery for whisky drinkers who enjoy looking beyond Speyside’s best-known names.

Douglas Laing is an independent, family-owned Scotch whisky company founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. He began as a blender and merchant, building his own inventory of casks sourced from a wide range of distilleries. Those early relationships formed the foundation of a business that is now managed by the third generation of the Laing family.

The company brings together two important disciplines. Carefully selected single cask malt and grain whiskies are released through ranges such as Old Particular and Xtra Old Particular. Douglas Laing also creates blended malts designed to express the character of Scotland’s whisky regions. Its Remarkable Regional Malts include well-known names such as Big Peat, Scallywag, Timorous Beastie, Rock Island, The Epicurean and The Gauldrons.

The whiskies are presented with a strong emphasis on character and authenticity, generally without added colouring or chill filtration. Following the acquisition of Strathearn Distillery in 2019, Douglas Laing also expanded from blending and bottling into distilling. In this way, the family company combines a long history of cask ownership with a distinctive and modern approach to Scotch whisky.
