Cardhu 27 yo 1973/2000 (60.02%, Rare Malts)

Colour: pale gold.

Nose: bigger of course than the new ones, as well as more complex, but there’s the same distillery character (nuttiness and maltiness plus whiffs of smoke). Develops on hints of olive oil, linseed oil and smoked ham as well as a little nougat, getting more honeyed after that (acacia). And is this lipstick? Much less ‘mundane’ than other Cardhus. With water: and unusual farminess, notes of patchouli, wet newspaper, wet hay... Very good surprise.

Mouth (neat): powerful, very fruity (reminding me of the ‘SCR’ 07.04 we just had), with this enjoyable oiliness. Also notes of flower cordial (mullein), apple jelly... With water: it got maltier and, to tell you the truth, bigger than when neat. More grassy notes, a little wax, cider apples, ginger, white peaches... Good!

Finish: long, balanced but assertive even if slightly middle-of-the-roadish now. Very good whisky anyway, even if I think the more recent 22yo 1982 was more interesting (90).

Cardhu Distillery

Cardhu Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, near the village of Knockando in Moray. Founded in 1824 by John and Helen Cumming, Cardhu has a rich history and is known as one of the few distilleries co-founded and run by a woman. Helen Cumming played a crucial role in the distillery's early years.

A unique feature of Cardhu is the use of pure spring water from the nearby Mannoch Hills, which contributes to the purity and quality of their whiskies. Cardhu whiskies are known for their smooth and accessible flavour profiles, with notes of honey, apple, vanilla and a subtle hint of spiciness. The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills and a slow distillation process, ensuring a rich and balanced spirit.

The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, creating a deep and complex flavour. Cardhu is a key component in the famous Johnnie Walker blended whiskies, but their single malts are loved for their refinement and balance. The combination of historic traditions, high-quality production and a beautiful location makes Cardhu a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Cardhu is one of Speyside’s better-known distilleries and has a history in which two enterprising women played leading roles. John and Helen Cumming began making whisky at their farm on Mannoch Hill in 1811. Production initially took place without a licence, until Cardhu was officially registered in 1824. Helen Cumming managed the daily operation and became one of the earliest and most influential women in the Scotch whisky industry.

Her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cumming later took control. In 1884 and 1885, she replaced the outdated farm distillery with a larger facility and developed Cardhu into an important whisky business. In 1893, she sold the distillery to John Walker & Sons on the condition that the family would remain involved. This created Cardhu’s lasting connection with Johnnie Walker, for which the distillery continues to supply an important malt whisky.

Cardhu is known for a smooth, elegant Speyside style, with honey, malt, orchard fruit, grassy freshness and gentle spice. Its approachable character makes Cardhu popular with newcomers, while its historical importance and refined spirit continue to appeal to experienced whisky enthusiasts.
