Yoichi Distillery

Yoichi Distillery is located on the west coast of Hokkaido, Japan, near the town of Yoichi. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, pioneer of the Japanese whisky industry and founder of Nikka Whisky, Yoichi is famous for its traditional Scotch distillation methods and unique location.

A unique feature of Yoichi Distillery is the use of direct coal fire heating for the pot stills, a rare and labour-intensive method that makes for a robust and complex whisky. The distillery is located in a cool, maritime climate, which contributes to the slow and balanced maturation of the whiskies.

Yoichi whiskies are known for their powerful and smoky character, with rich notes of peat, fruit, spice and a hint of saltiness. The whiskies are matured in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon and sherry casks, making for deep and layered flavour profiles.
