More about Fujikai

Fujikai whisky is produced by Monde Shuzo, a distillery originally established in 1952 in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Known for its production of sake and wine, Monde Shuzo has also focused on distilling whisky, with Fujikai whisky being one of their most notable creations.

A unique feature of Fujikai whisky is the use of water from the pure springs of nearby Mount Fuji, which contributes to its freshness and purity. The Fujikai 10-year-old, the distillery's most famous expression, is matured in small 100-litre casks, creating an intense, concentrated flavour profile. This whisky is known for its robust and powerful character, with pronounced notes of peat, smoke, dark chocolate and spices.

The whisky has a distinctly Japanese character, with a firm structure and a long, complex finish. Despite its limited production, Fujikai has attracted international attention for its unique and bold approach to whisky, combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with innovative maturation methods.

Fujikai whisky is an exceptional product from Monde Shuzo, perfectly embodying Japan's rich culture and craftsmanship in whisky production.

Tasting note
Nose

Vanilla, caramel and pronounced oak, followed by green apple, pear and fresh herbs. Pinewood, dried leaves and subtle smoke give the aroma a distinctive earthy quality.

Palate

Dry and spicy with malt, apple, walnuts and toasted oak. Green herbs, pepper and a hint of peat are complemented by vanilla and lightly caramelised fruit.

Finish

Medium in length with mint, ginger, white pepper and spiced oak. Earthy notes and gentle smoke remain in the background.

Monde Shuzo

Monde Shuzo is a versatile Japanese drinks producer based in Yamanashi, a region best known for its vineyards and its proximity to Mount Fuji. The company was founded in 1952 as Toho Shuzo and initially produced wine, Chinese-style wine and vodka. Its name changed to Morozoff Shuzo in 1960, before the present name Monde Shuzo was adopted in 1972. The name refers to awards won by the company at the Monde Selection in Paris in 1967.

Although Monde Shuzo is primarily known in Japan as a winery, the company has also produced liqueurs, brandy and whisky over the years. Among whisky enthusiasts, it is most closely associated with Fujikai, a limited ten-year-old Japanese single malt released for the European market in 2015. Matured in former bourbon casks, the whisky took its name from Mount Fuji and Kai, the historic name of Yamanashi.

Monde Shuzo represents a lesser-known side of Japanese whisky: small-scale, distinctive and closely linked to a producer whose activities extend far beyond whisky alone. This background makes bottles from Monde Shuzo especially interesting to collectors and enthusiasts looking beyond Japan’s largest and most familiar whisky names.
