Tasting Notes

Nose

Deep aromas of molasses, leather, dark plums, aged wood and spices like clove and nutmeg. A hint of varnish, tobacco and raisin adds complexity and allure.

Palate

Powerful and layered with notes of burnt sugar, black tea, walnut, dates and candied orange. Oak influence and bitter chocolate bring structure and tension.

Finish

Long and dry with a lingering mix of oak, dark spices, coffee grounds and a subtle touch of aged rum esters.

About the distillery

The Diamond distillery, founded around 1670, is home to the only remaining rum distillery in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara River, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd. (DDL), the company established by the Government of Guyana in an effort to consolidate the country's rum production. This began in 1974 and ended with the closure of Uitvlugt in 1999.

Diamond blends its El Dorado brand with distillate from various combinations of its rum-producing stills, including two two-column English Coffey stills installed there in the 1950s, and a rarely used high-capacity John Dore pot still. These work alongside the "Heritage Stills" acquired from Uitvlugt, namely Uitvlugt's own historic four-column French Savalle stills, the Versailles and Port Mourant wooden pot stills, and the Enmore wooden coffey still, the oldest and last of its kind in the world.
