Secret Speyside 13 years 2008 - 2022 #41

This Secret Speyside has a clear hint on the label. This in fact depicts the Glenfarclas distillery, so very secret we wouldn't call this Speyside whisky. What is nicely atypical, however, is the ex-bourbon cask. Glenfarclas actually only releases sherry cask matured whisky, so this is a unique release from this distillery.

Tasting note

Nose

Upon uncorking this Glenfarclas, you are immediately enveloped by an inviting aroma. The nose inhales subtle notes of toasted almonds and marzipan, which combine to form a wonderfully creamy aroma. Behind this is a refreshing hint of orange, as if you have just cut a juicy write. The fragrance is enriched by the sweet, buttery scent of freshly baked shortbread, complemented by the delicate freshness of ripe pear.

Taste

At the first sip, you are welcomed by a flavour that is rich and versatile. The sweet notes of red grape juice mingle harmoniously with the bitter nuances of cocoa nibs, creating a complex and delectable contrast. The whisky then reveals layers of caramelised sugar, which add a pleasing sweetness and depth to the flavour. The whole is exceptionally well-rounded, with a perfectly balanced flavour that makes every sip a treat.

Finish

The finish of this single cask whisky is long-lasting and satisfying, with the sweet and bitter notes slowly fading and leaving a warm, lingering impression. The creaminess observed in the nose lingers, providing a soft, velvety finish. Aged in an atypical ex-bourbon cask, this whisky offers a unique and refined experience that will delight both the connoisseur and the new enthusiast.

Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenfarclas Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, at the foot of Mount Ben Rinnes in Ballindalloch. Founded in 1836 by Robert Hay and owned by the Grant family since 1865, Glenfarclas has a rich history of more than a century and a half in producing high-quality single malt whiskies. This distillery prides itself on its independence and family management, which contributes to the consistent quality and character of their products.

A unique feature of Glenfarclas is the use of directly fired copper pot stills, which contributes to the rich and full flavour of their whiskies. The distillery uses pure spring water from nearby springs on the Ben Rinnes, providing a pure and fresh base for their whisky.

Glenfarclas whiskies are known for their rich, complex flavour profiles, with notes of sherry, dried fruit and spices. The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, creating a deep, sweet and layered flavour experience. The combination of a beautiful location, traditional techniques and high-quality production makes Glenfarclas a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.
