Port Charlotte 2013 PMC:01 Cask Exploration Series
Port Charlotte is renowned for its heavily peated whiskies that perfectly capture the maritime influences of Islay. The PMC: 01 2013 is a remarkable addition to the Cask Exploration Series, having matured in Pomerol wine casks sourced from one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious wine regions. This results in a unique fusion of deep peat smoke, rich red fruit notes, and elegant spiciness.
Tasting Notes
Nose
A complex and inviting nose with powerful peat smoke softened by layers of red fruit and sweet spices. Notes of ripe cherries, plums, and berries blend with smoky barbecue tones, dried herbs, and a hint of dark chocolate. A subtle touch of toasted oak and vanilla adds extra depth.
Palate
Medium-dry and full-bodied with a creamy texture. The rich peat smoke is beautifully balanced by the influence of the Pomerol cask, bringing forward flavors of blackberry jam, cherry liqueur, and a hint of red wine vinegar. Spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg develop, along with a light salinity and hints of roasted nuts.
Finish
Long and warming with a beautiful fusion of peat, fruit, and spice. The smoky notes linger, softened by the sweetness of dark fruit and a light touch of cedarwood and dark chocolate. A subtle wine-like elegance remains on the palate, giving this whisky a layered and captivating finish.
This unique expression of Port Charlotte showcases how a wine cask finish can add an extra dimension to a bold, peated whisky.
Bruichladdich Distillery
Bruichladdich Distillery is located on the west coast of the island of Islay, on the shores of Loch Indaal. Founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, the distillery has a rich history and is known for its innovative and experimental approach to whisky production.
A specific feature of Bruichladdich is the diversity in their whiskies. The distillery produces three types of single malt whisky: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore. Bruichladdich whiskies are unpeated and are known for their fruity and floral character with notes of citrus and sea salt. Port Charlotte is heavily peated, with a robust smokiness and rich flavours of earth and spices. Octomore, the world's most peated whisky, has intense smoke notes with complex layers of fruit and spice.
The distillery places a strong emphasis on terroir and transparency, using locally grown barley and the pure water of Islay. The whiskies are matured in a variety of cask types, such as ex-bourbon, wine and sherry casks, making for complex and diverse flavour profiles.
Bruichladdich is known for its commitment to sustainability and local community, and their whiskies are often described as lively, complex and distinct. The combination of tradition, innovation and a strong focus on local ingredients makes Bruichladdich a unique and respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.
