Dailuaine 16 Years Flora & Fauna
Dailuaine is one of Speyside’s hidden gems – quietly appreciated by whisky lovers but rarely in the spotlight. Fortunately, the Flora & Fauna series gives this distillery a stage. This 16-year-old single malt is a rich and robust example of what Dailuaine has to offer: full-bodied, deeply sherried, and intriguingly smoky. A whisky perfect for the end of the evening – or the start of a deep conversation.
Tasting Notes
Nose
A fragrant blend of stewed fruits, dark cherries, raisins, and caramelized sugar, underpinned by leather and a soft smokiness.
Palate
Full and rich on the tongue. Sherry notes dominate with plums, nuts, and a touch of dark chocolate. Underneath lie spicy layers of cinnamon, clove, and a hint of tobacco.
Finish
Long and warming with a smoky sweetness that slowly fades, accompanied by oak and dried fruit.
Flora & Fauna Series
In a world where big names often steal the spotlight, Diageo's Flora & Fauna series is a quiet hero. This particular series was launched in the 1990s to give a stage to lesser-known distilleries within the group's portfolio. Think of names like Auchroisk, Benrinnes, Dailuaine or Inchgower - distilleries that usually disappear in blends, but shine in this series as Single Malt.
What makes this series so charming is its combination of quality, character and simplicity. Each bottle carries a label with an elegant drawing of a flora or fauna scene (hence the name), symbolic of the nature surrounding the distillery in question. The whiskies themselves are often not too heavily filtered, bottled at 43% alcohol, and matured in classic casks such as ex-bourbon or sherry casks - without excessive frills, but with plenty of authenticity.
Flora & Fauna bottlings are loved by collectors and whisky enthusiasts who love discovering something unique, something "off the beaten path". It is like getting a peek behind the scenes of Scotland's whisky world - a world that is not just about marketing, but more importantly about craft and taste.
In short: the Flora & Fauna series is a loving tribute to the silent workhorses of the whisky world. Honest, pure and with its own voice - exactly as single malt is meant to be.
Dailuaine Distillery
Dailuaine Distillery is located in the Speyside region, near the village of Carron in Moray. Founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie, Dailuaine has a rich history in whisky production and is known for its high-quality single malts. The distillery is picturesquely located at the foot of Mount Ben Rinnes, which provides a constant source of pure water.
A unique feature of Dailuaine is the use of worm tubs, a traditional cooling system that contributes to the full and complex flavour profile of their whiskies. Dailuaine whiskies are known for their robust and full-bodied character, with rich notes of malt, dried fruit, honey and a subtle spiciness. The distillery matures its whiskies mainly in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, making for a deep and complex taste experience.
Dailuaine mainly produces whisky for blends, but their single malts are also loved by connoisseurs for their unique character and depth. The combination of a beautiful location, traditional techniques and high-quality production makes Dailuaine a respected name among whisky connoisseurs worldwide.
