Description

Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 1964

The Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 1964 is a legendary and exceptionally rare sweet Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. After more than sixty years of ageing, this wine perfectly illustrates why Moulin Touchais is regarded worldwide as the benchmark for long-lived Coteaux du Layon. It is deep, layered, and intense, yet remarkably fresh and refined. A wine that transcends time and tells its story with every sip.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep amber with pronounced copper and mahogany tones.

Aroma

Extraordinarily complex aromas of honey, dried apricot, fig, and candied citrus, followed by beeswax, nuts, caramel, tea, spice, and a subtle earthy note.

Taste

Highly concentrated and rich, showing layers of dried fruit, honey, and caramelised apple. Despite its profound sweetness, the wine remains strikingly vibrant thanks to fresh, supporting acidity that brings balance, tension, and elegance.

Finish

Almost endless, with sweet, spicy, and lightly savoury nuances fading slowly and harmoniously.

Food Pairing

Magnificent with foie gras, blue cheeses, or desserts featuring nuts and caramel. Also extraordinary on its own as a contemplative wine, where each sip reveals new layers.

Producer

Moulin Touchais is an iconic Loire estate, famous for its deliberately extremely long-aged Coteaux du Layon wines. By ageing bottles for decades in its own cellars, the domaine demonstrates the extraordinary ageing potential and timeless elegance of Chenin Blanc. Historic vintages such as 1964 stand among the true legends of the appellation.

Moulin Touchais

Moulin Touchais is a historic family-owned estate from Coteaux du Layon in France’s Loire Valley. Founded in 1787, the domaine is now continued by the eighth generation of the Touchais family, making it one of the oldest wine estates in Anjou. Over the centuries, the family has built an impressive reserve of mature vintages, stored deep underground in an extensive network of cellars.

Moulin Touchais produces sweet white wine exclusively from Chenin Blanc. A small proportion of the grapes is harvested relatively early to preserve sufficient fresh acidity. The remaining fruit is left longer on the vines and picked in several stages once it has developed greater ripeness and concentration. This distinctive approach creates a natural balance between sweetness and freshness. Following vinification, each vintage matures in bottle in the estate’s cellars for at least ten years before being released. Moulin Touchais is therefore renowned for complex wines with exceptional ageing potential, and several mature vintages are often available alongside one another.
